Online Course

EATASA aims to run courses annually. Courses are typically held either in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Jeffreys Bay where participants can enjoy a comfortable learning environment for the theory section of the course as well as quality stables and arena space for the practical section.

The EATASA Fundamental Hippotherapy course is a theoretical and practical course which covers the following topics:

  • Movement of the horse
  • Training requirements of the hippotherapy horse
  • Handling and leading the horse for hippotherapy
  • Equipment for hippotherapy
  • Theory of hippotherapy
  • Hippotherapy in the context of occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech- and language therapy
  • Practical demonstrations of hippotherapy
  • Experiential workshop of the movement of the horse and leading the hippotherapy horse
  • Ethical considerations in hippotherapy

Host a course at your yard

EATASA would like to ensure therapists are properly trained when using hippotherapy. We therefore aim to make training more accessible. We encourage you to consider hosting a course so we can come to your area and share our knowledge. The hosting of a hippotherapy course requires certain specifications. If you feel your yard could host a hippotherapy course, contact us via email. The following are necessary when running a hippotherapy:

  • a minimum of 5 well trained therapy horses who can long line, comfortable with toys and sensory objects
  • suitable therapy tack, enough for the 5 horses
  • Undercover lecture area with projector screen / wall
  • Therapy arena
  • Parking area for course attendants
